A chasen (茶筅) is a traditional bamboo stirrer used to prepare matcha tea in the Japanese tea ceremony. It is an essential tool for achieving a perfectly frothy and velvety consistency.
A chasen is an object made from a single piece of bamboo, precisely cut and formed into thin fibers. The number of fibers (teeth) can vary – the more, the easier it is to obtain a fine foam. The most common variants are:
-
80-pole (80 stamens) – the most commonly used, ideal for everyday matcha preparation.
-
100-pole and more – for a fluffier foam, used in tea ceremonies.
-
Chasen with fewer stamens (e.g. 50-pole) – designed for thicker matcha.
The set includes a chasen with 80 sticks, perfect for obtaining perfectly frothy matcha.
