Ceremonial Matcha
✅ Used for centuries in traditional tea ceremonies in Japan, this matcha is the highest quality available on the market.
✅ This variety comes from the first harvest. The tea leaves are the youngest and least exposed to sunlight, which increases the chlorophyll content. As a result, the ceremonial matcha powder has the most vibrant shade of green among the different varieties.
✅ The stems and veins are removed before the leaves are ground into powder. As a result, the matcha obtained in this process is characterized by a naturally delicate consistency and a subtle, sweet taste.
✅ It is thicker than other types of matcha and foams beautifully. It has a smooth taste, with a slight hint of sweetness, making it ideal for tea ceremonies.
✅ Ceremonial matcha should be consumed in its original form to fully appreciate the taste of the best variety of this tea.
Why is first harvest matcha better?
✅ During the winter, tea buds hibernate for several months, waiting for spring. During this time, they accumulate valuable nutrients, making them exceptionally rich and full of flavor.
✅ As the saying goes, "Quality takes time." First-Pick tea leaves grow slowly in a cool climate, drawing the best from nature over a longer period of time. This makes First-Pick Matcha unmatched in quality and flavor, offering a more intense experience for true connoisseurs.
What does it contain?
✅ L-theanine is a key source of umami, the plant-based sweetness that defines the quality and character of matcha. First-harvest matcha contains three times more L-theanine than second-harvest tea. Later harvests, such as the third and fourth, have even lower L-theanine content. In addition, the first harvest concentrates the most nutrients in the leaves.
✅ If you have ever tried a very bitter matcha, dear reader, it was most likely not from the first harvest. Bitterness is not a typical matcha flavor; high-quality tea has an intense, full-bodied flavor with minimal bitterness, which means you don’t need to add sugar to balance it out.
✅ For both taste and health benefits, it is worth choosing only first-harvest matcha. Only such matcha can be considered true ceremonial matcha, which is consumed only with water. To meet the growing demand, many farmers produce matcha from later harvests, but only first-harvest matcha guarantees the highest quality and authenticity.
How to recognize good matcha?
✅ Good matcha can be recognized primarily by its color. It should be intensely green, because the higher the leaves grew and the younger they were, the more chlorophyll they contained, which is responsible for the intense green color. Leaves growing lower are more yellowish due to less light. Therefore, the more intensely green the matcha is, the better the leaves were used to produce it, and the more yellow, the older and from the lower parts of the plant. The classification of the types of matcha we offer can be found below.
- Here we offer ceremonial matcha where the producer has selected only the best leaves from the first harvest in spring.
✅ The second quality indicator is consistency. The more silky the powder, the higher its quality. We can check this by grinding the matcha on a white sheet of paper, for example. The best matcha is usually ground the longest, which results in the finest powder. In our case, both types are ground on a traditional stone matcha mill, but the photo below shows the difference between Royal Brand ceremonial matcha and regular matcha. Bad matcha will have a brown tint and will not allow you to make a continuous line.
✅ Bitter notes do not always indicate poor quality, as their presence depends on the region of cultivation and the method of cultivation. Of course, if the matcha is unpalatable or has a fishy aftertaste, it is a sign that we are dealing with a low-quality product from a late harvest.
✅ The following scale can be used to evaluate any type of matcha, which I strongly encourage. Matcha classes such as everyday matcha, traditional matcha, premium matcha, luxury matcha, etc., were created for marketing purposes and do not say much about the actual quality of the product. The actual quality is determined by a number of features that I have described above.

How do the coats of arms of the regions of Japan differ?
✅ “The color is Shizuoka, the scent is Uji, and the taste is Sayama.” These ancient words from a folk song from “Sayamacha Tsukuriuta” show us three regions in Japan where high-quality matcha is produced
Shizuoka Tea: The Pinnacle of Japanese Green Tea
✅ Shizuoka is the true capital of tea in Japan, where as much as 40% of the country's tea production comes from. The history of tea cultivation in this region dates back to 1241, making Shizuoka not only the largest producer, but also a place with a long and rich tea tradition.
✅ An unparalleled climate, crystal clear waters and a strategic location close to major ports make Shizuoka the heart of green tea in Japan. Tea plantations are spread across the picturesque hillsides near Mount Fuji and along rivers, taking advantage of the region's topographic and climatic diversity.
✅ Rich, volcanic soil and fresh water create ideal conditions for tea production. The variations in sunlight, temperature, and morning mists in different parts of Shizuoka contribute to the incredible variety of flavors and aromas of teas from this region. Shizuoka is a place where nature and tradition combine to create some of the best teas in the world. Whether it’s rich tencha used for matcha, classic sencha, nutty genmaicha, or smoked hojicha, Shizuoka tea offers a wide range of flavors and health benefits, including stress reduction and antioxidant properties.
Uji Tea: The Essence of Kyoto
✅ Renowned for its exquisite quality, Uji tea, also known as Kyoto tea, comes from the picturesque village of Wazuka. The village is famous not only for its stunning tea plantations, such as Ishitera Harayama, Shirasu and Erihara, but also for being named one of the most beautiful villages in Japan in 2015. The rich history of Uji tea dates back to the Kamakura period in the 13th century and was prized as a luxury gift. Thanks to its proximity to Kyoto where the Emperor of Japan held court, Uji tea was often served on his table.
Sayama Tea: The Hidden Gem of Saitama
✅ On the outskirts of Tokyo, on the Musashino Plateau, Sayama tea thrives, also known as Saitama tea. In a cool climate, it produces thick leaves that withstand winter frosts. The fertile soil of this region produces a sweet, aromatic tea that has been enjoyed since the Heian period. Originally prized for its medicinal properties, Sayama tea now delights palates with a variety of culinary delights, such as unique green tea leaves in tempura.
