From the forests of the past to the laboratories of the future - can amber heal?
Review of the book "Succinite. Fossilized Resin Rediscovered" by Piotr M. Barczak
The book "Succinite: Fossilized Resin Rediscovered" is an ambitious, interdisciplinary publication that combines geology, paleobotany, natural history, chemistry, pharmacology, and elements of folk medicine. Author Dr. Piotr M. Barczak guides the reader through the fascinating world of Baltic amber, also known as succinite, not only restoring its cultural significance but also discovering its new, potentially therapeutic uses.

The main assumptions of the book
This isn't a book about jewelry. It's a story about a 40-million-year-old resin , the trees that secreted it, the geochemical processes that shaped it, and the biologically active compounds that may have implications for modern human health.
Piotr M. Barczak, an economist and geology enthusiast, demonstrates exceptional determination in delving into a topic that, while popular in jewelry, remains scientifically under-researched in terms of its biological and pharmacological properties. This book is the result of years of personal research, consultations with experts, and experiments with amber extracts.

The author not only explores the geological and paleontological aspects of amber's origins but also proposes bold hypotheses, such as the idea that "Baltic amber" is more of a marketing term than a scientific one, and that its origins may be more complex than previously thought. Part of the text is devoted to an analysis of historical sources that demonstrate the importance of amber in European history, both as a luxury item and as a medicinal agent.
Noteworthy are the chapters on the biological activity of compounds found in amber —such as terpenes, flavonoids, and succinic acid—and their potential impact on human health, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. However, the author emphasizes that much of this information is hypothetical and based on preliminary research.

From an editorial perspective, the book is a meticulous compendium of knowledge—rich in illustrations, photographs, and quotations from scientific literature. The clear structure and straightforward language make even complex topics understandable to a wide audience, including those without a background in natural sciences.
Our civilization has entered the third millennium, and the secrets of the fossilized resin found in the Baltic region, Poland, Ukraine, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, and Sweden remain a significant mystery. Therefore, it's worth rediscovering succinite, viewing it from the perspective of the millions of years over which the planet has evolved, and seizing the opportunity for a broader analysis than was available to previous generations.
This fragment perfectly captures the author's mission: to restore amber's rightful place in scientific and cultural awareness , showing that it is much more than just an ornament – it is an organic treasure of nature that still holds unexplained biological, historical and therapeutic potential.

Structure and content of the book
The book consists of ten coherent, thematic chapters that together form a broad compendium of knowledge about Baltic amber – both as an object of geological research and as a raw material with biological and therapeutic potential. The author guides the reader step by step from the origin and evolution of amber , through its chemical composition and biological activity , to its possible applications in medicine and cosmetology.
In the first chapters, Piotr M. Barczak focuses on the geological and paleobotanical background of succinite. He discusses the conditions of its formation, age, and origin, citing various scientific theories and proposing his own hypotheses. He weaves in interesting environmental comparisons with present-day tropical regions, allowing for a better understanding of the flora from which the amber-bearing resin may have originated.
The subsequent sections of the book focus on the chemical composition of amber and its unique properties . The author provides a detailed analysis of the presence of terpenes, organic acids, flavonoids, and trace elements, among others. These chapters are richly illustrated, supported by scientific literature, and provide a solid foundation for understanding further conclusions regarding amber's biological activity.
The central element of this publication is a discussion of the therapeutic potential of succinite . Piotr M. Barczak presents the results of research and observations on the effects of amber extract – including in the context of cancer cells, brain function, the immune system, and cellular bioelectricity. He also addresses the topic of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and the potential use of amber as a nutraceutical to support future therapies.
Later in the book, the author also addresses the use of amber in cosmetology and traditional medicine . He discusses well-known and controversial products, such as baby teethers and amber oils, analyzing their popularity and scientific validity. He also broadens the geographical perspective, presenting amber from other parts of the world—from South America to Asia—and comparing it with Baltic succinite.
The book concludes with a concluding chapter in which the author draws conclusions and proposes proposals for further research. He highlights the enormous, still largely unexplored potential of amber and the need to integrate knowledge from various fields —geology, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and history—to fully understand and utilize what has been maturing beneath the Earth's surface for millions of years.

Who is this book for?
For anyone who:
- is interested in amber as a natural and cultural raw material,
- I want to know its pharmacological and cosmetic potential ,
- seeks interdisciplinary knowledge combining science, history and biology,
- collects minerals and fossil resins,
- likes scientific stories with a hint of controversy.
Why is it worth reading?
Because "Succinite" isn't just about stone—it's about time, evolution, the chemistry of life , and human curiosity. It's a book that combines science and passion, past and future. It shows that even a well-known material can still hold secrets—if viewed with a fresh, investigative eye.

Author's biographical note
Dr Piotr M. Barczak , PhD, is an entrepreneur, journalist, and researcher with a PhD in economics. Although formally trained as an economist (SGH), he has long been passionate about geology, mineralogy, and pharmacognosy.

He grew up in the geologically rich town of Nysa, where he attended the renowned Carolinum High School – one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the region, renowned for its high standard of education and tradition of educating outstanding minds. Even then, he demonstrated a talent for research and a passion for the natural sciences. He studied chemistry, engineering, journalism, and political science, which provided him with a solid foundation for the interdisciplinary approach evident in his publications.
As part of a research and development project funded by the National Centre for Research and Development, he collaborated with leading scientists on innovative nutraceuticals based on amber and chrysophyllum nobile. He is the co-author of English-language scientific pamphlets such as Baltic Amber: Elixir of Immortality and Amber: Elixir of Immortality , which have generated interest in alternative medicine circles.
For Piotr Barczak, amber is more than just a collector's item—it's an organic trace of Earth's history and a potential source of solutions for modern medicine and cosmetology. His work reflects his belief that nature from millions of years ago still has something to teach us .
